Indian Govt to Invest ₹3 Lakh Crore to Upgrade Assam’s Highways to Global Standards

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced in the Rajya Sabha that the central government will invest ₹3 lakh crore to upgrade Assam’s national highways to international standards. This ambitious plan aims to enhance connectivity, boost economic growth, and generate employment opportunities in the region.

Key Projects Under the Initiative

  1. Guwahati Ring Road: A crucial project under this initiative, the Guwahati Ring Road is being built at a cost of ₹5,800 crore and is expected to be completed by December 2027.
  2. Brahmaputra River Tunnel: The government has proposed constructing a tunnel under the Brahmaputra River in Dibrugarh at an estimated cost of ₹12,000 crore. The approval process is currently underway.
  3. Elevated Highway Over Kaziranga National Park: Plans for an elevated highway over Kaziranga National Park have been outlined, pending Cabinet approval. Gadkari assured that funding will not be an issue for this or any other proposed project.
  4. Extensive Highway Development: The massive investment will cover the development of highways, bridges, and tunnels across Assam, aiming to bring the region’s infrastructure on par with international standards, particularly those in the United States.
